Error Correction:
A sample of iTDi in-house webinars

Theme: In addition to our free, open-to-all, quarterly webinars, iTDi will also be offering monthly in-house webinars for teachers who've enrolled in one of our courses and want to interact further with mentors and others in the iTDi community. These monthly online sessions are designed to focus on one topic and allow teachers to go deeper in sharing experiences, exploring ideas and defining teacher beliefs. Come have a taste of what we'll have in store for members of our iTDi community. All are welcome to join this session on "Error Correction" featuring iTDi directors Scott Thornbury, Steven Herder, and Barbara Hoskins Sakamoto.

Part 2 Panel discussion
12:30-13:30

Webinar participants are invited to ask questions and share comments in a wide-ranging, free-flowing discussion about error correction for various contexts and among different levels of language learners.

Barbara Hoskins Sakamoto - Embrace mistakes!

iTDi Program Director

Embrace mistakes! They show that your young learners are actively processing rules for a new language - in most cases, rules that you haven't explicitly taught. I'll look at the wealth of information you can learn from your students' mistakes, and how you can use this information to help young learners "get English right" from the start.

Scott Thornbury - Does error correction really work?

iTDi Academic Director

Does error correction really work? Teachers take it for granted that correcting errors is 'a good thing'. But does it work? I'll be looking at the evidence both for correction and against it, and also talking about ways of using errors in a positive and productive way, to promote more effective learning.

Steven Herder - Why correct ESL errors in an EFL class?

iTDi Program Director

Why correct ESL errors in an EFL class? A lot has been written about error correction. John Truscott and Dana Ferris have been arguing opposite extremes (especially for L2 writing) for years and both lament the lack of clarity on this topic. In all of the excitement, they may have missed the key to this argument – the gargantuan differences between EFL and ESL.
